In 2014, major advances in a structural biology technique called Cryo-EM made it possible to obtain 3D proteins at the high resolutions required for drug discovery. cryoSPARC enables pharmaceutical companies to obtain 3D protein structures via Cryo-EM. Diabetes Data Liberation Platform

Big Data

Diabetes devices, such as blood glucose meters and continuous glucose monitors, often struggle to communicate or share their data with other systems, hindering the patient’s ability to share data and use complementary tools for self-management of their condition. Through our work with JDRF, the ISO/IEEE 11073 Personal Health Device Working Group and the Bluetooth Special Interest Group Medical Device Working Group, we are furthering the development of interoperability standards for diabetes devices by identifying the barriers confronted by manufacturers when trying to implement the standards, and developing strategies to facilitate easy adoption. This includes delivery of workshops and toolkits for device manufacturers in order to facilitate knowledge transfer and accelerate adoption of standardized protocols within their technologies.

Enhanced Medical Nutrition

Through this project Enhanced Medical Nutrition (EMN) will asses the practicality/ feasibility of introducing a perioperative immunonutrition protocol into a hospital environment as well as a true measure of impact on the rate of surgical site infection (SSI) using the NSQIP audit system. York University launched the Health Coach Institute and the Certificate in Health Coaching in 2014. This Certificate addresses the competencies and skills needed to train registered health professionals to health coach. We will continue this success by applying health coaching as an intervention for diabetes and obesity, finding solutions to integrating health coaching practices in the current health care system, and training internationally-educated health professionals to transition into health coaching roles.

Machine Stereo Vision: Revolutionizing Surgery

Devices

During surgery the preoperative imagery is displayed to guide the surgeon during the procedure. A shortcoming of current practice is that it can be difficult for the surgeon to perceive the geometric relationship between the displayed preoperative imagery and the live surgical scene before them. We respond directly to this challenge by yielding a machine vision system for automatically registering live video of a surgical scene to corresponding preoperative imagery. The registration will enable a graphical overlay of the live imagery to the model that will increase the situational awareness of the surgeon. This capability will improve the accuracy and safety of surgical procedures by minimizing collateral damage and complications.

Ned

Ned, short for “No Evident Disease”, is a seamless mobile platform designed for patients at all therapeutic stages of prostate cancer survivorship. It provides patients and their oncologists with a means to prospectively collect patient-reported outcomes through validated health-related quality of life questionnaires. Portable Cell Analyzer

Developed in 2012 as a diagnostic tool for testing HIV/AIDS, this device accurately provides rapid results in a portable and cost-effective manner, which is highly relevant in developing countries. Seizure Detection Simplified

Over the past 5 years, Novela Inc. have successfully developed a patented implantable device to predict and stop epilepsy seizures. However, implantable devices are not ideal with respect to promptly detecting brain injury among patients. We will translate Novela’s patented implantable technology into a wearable device that will be used as a low-cost brain monitoring solution in the emergency room. The wearable device will host a proprietary algorithm for early detection of epilepsy seizures. It will be used to monitor real-time brain activity of the patients who come to the ER with brain injury, to identify cases that require immediate care and treatment.

Cloud DX, Ontario’s Start-up of 2015, is developing VITALITI, a next generation vital sign monitor that can autonomously diagnose up to nineteen separate diseases. Through the use of such systems, coupled with smart software, the aim is to reduce clinical workload and optimize patient recovery. This project focused on redesigning the technology’s earpiece, otoscope, and ECG sensors to improve signal quality, reliability, performance and user experience through a human-centered design process. VITALITI was submitted to the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE competition and was awarded the Bold Epic Innovator Award.

Devices

Dr. Lauren Sergio and her team at the Motor Control Laboratory at York University have studied the use of bimanual coordination in assessing brain function. Using a custom designed manual assessment device, Dr. Sergio has been able to provide a validated measure of how the two sides of the brain communicate in producing skilled eye‐hand coordination. To date, it has been used primarily on elite athletes as part of the annual NHL draft prospect testing, and on non‐elite youth athletes. However, it could also be used for assessing populations having brain damage, including stroke recovery progression, neurodegeneration, and chronic congenital conditions, such as cerebral palsy and developmental coordination disorder, or neuromuscular deficits. Along with MyAbilities, Inc., Dr. Sergio and her team will transform the system into an electronic system that can be deployed on a tablet or smartphone, allowing global access that will improve the metrics available to trainers and therapists working with athletes and patients.
